Employee count is the number of people a company reports employing as of its fiscal year end. Every point is the company-wide headcount the company itself stated in that year's annual report (Form 10-K); no year is estimated, interpolated or carried forward, so a missing year means that report gave no explicit company-wide figure. A rising count usually reflects hiring or acquisitions, and a falling count layoffs or businesses sold off.
